Best Luxury Cars of 2014
The luxury automobile class is a rather curious subject. Once an indulgence for the entrepreneurs or CEOs of the world, the emergence of the so-called “entry level luxury” market class or “near luxury” designation has somewhat confused this segment – indeed, now more than ever the mass-market buyer can find him or herself behind the wheel of a luxury-branded chariot but one that doesn’t carry the panache of, say, a Mercedes S-Class. In a nutshell, the luxury car market now encompasses a veritable cornucopia of prices, styles, sizes and features that sometimes blur the line between “entry level luxury” and fully loaded mainstream vehicles.
Be that as it may, the 2014 car market is poised to be set on fire with some head-turning entries in the luxury class. Starting with the Acura RLX sedan, here’s a sexy-yet-sophisticated take on a classic touring road machine from the likes of Honda’s upscale division. With a price range of $48,450 to $60,450 and boasting a 20 mpg rage, the RLX can be had in the Base Sedan, Navigation Sedan, Technology Package Sedan, Krell Audio Sedan and Advanced Package Sedan trims.
The Audi A4 for 2014, with a price range of $33,800 to $34,700, will continue to soldier on as a premium sedan with what is considered to be one of the finest interiors in the entry luxury sports sedan segment. The 2014 model’s Premium Plus and Prestige trims boast standard features such as S-line body kits and a slightly revised front bumper that includes a darker shade for the single-frame grille and reshaped diffuser piece out back. The 2014 A6 model, meanwhile, is poised to include some new features and options in an effort to further stimulate sales of the aluminum-bodied luxury sedan. Further, the A6 is, reportedly, going to be ready to do head-on battle with the Mercedes-Benz E350 and BMW 535i. Audi is preparing to inject new elements all across the board on the majority – if not all – of their models for 2014 including the S7 and S8.
Moving into the world of supreme luxury motor vehicles, Bentley’s 2014 Continental GT — notably in convertible guise – is gearing up to be the fastest four-seat convertible in the world, boasting a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W-12 engine that makes an astounding 616 horsepower and maximum torque of 590 pound-feet. This uber-sexy Bentley drop top will be available in a price range of $195,200 to $238,700. Meanwhile, the commanding and ultra-exotic Flying Spur sedan will represent itself in 2014 with reworked front and rear air spring systems that are slated to be 10 and 13 percent softer, respectively, than their predecessors according to Bentley. And, even the wild Mulsanne is gearing up to be a highly successful ultra-luxury car for 2014.
BMW’s consummate segment leader, the 3 Series, continues the automaker’s well-rounded and highly desirable “entry luxury” sensibilities in its 2014 guise. What is going to ultimately make it a top luxury car pick for 2014? How about excellent ride/handling balance, powerful and fuel-efficient engines, upscale interiors with straightforward controls and even spacious seating for its class. Of note is the re-emergence of the 3 Series Wagon, returning to BMW’s lineup after taking the model year 2013 off. The 2014 Wagon will come only as an all-wheel-drive model – and, much to the amazement of car enthusiasts worldwide, the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible won’t be members of the 2014 3 Series anymore, instead moving to become inaugural members of the 2014 “4 Series” line. Speaking of the 4 Series, this sexy new duo – comprised of the 428i and 435i – can be had with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system and boast carryover engines from the 3 Series range: i.e. the 428i is powered by the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder making 241 horsepower while the 435i utilizes the turbo-six mill with 306 horsepower. ActiveHybrid 3 models will also join the 2014 BMW lineup.
Of course, these are just more of the popular examples of what the 2014 luxury car playing field should look like – a plethora of alternatives will also be available to win the luxo-cruiser shopper’s heart and soul. Indeed, making choices in this class is limited only by one’s imagination.
